Ask any restaurant owner and they'll tell you getting an establishment up and running is no easy task. Finding the very best recipes, staff and menu is often a hit-or-miss venture, but for Keith and Elaine Polbinski, it's been a rewarding, and successful, ride.
The couple purchased T Street Pub ten years ago, when the establishment was mainly a bar that served a few sandwiches. In the years since, they have developed a full menu with a wide variety of food options that have brought in the customers, making T Street Pub a favorite dining choice of locals.
T Street Pub is in the category of a "bar and grill," but Elaine says it offers much more than the chain bar and grill restaurants.
"We have a game room, which is good for kids, and families feel comfortable here," she says.
The game room is located in the restaurant, but is separate from the dining area. It features a pool table and foosball table, as well as several video games. Elaine says she and the staff strive to make customers comfortable, whether they are in for a drink or a full meal, and try to make all guests feel at home in the restaurant. And while these efforts have definitely paid off, the quality of food is still the driving force behind T Street Pub.
Steve Williams comes to the restaurant about three times a week, and while he is the first to admit the owners and staff are a huge draw, he finds the food to be delicious, as well.
"They're just good people, and the restaurant has good food, and is clean," says Williams, who is especially partial to the fried chicken.
The owners of T Street have found that their hand-battered fried chicken is a favorite of many patrons. On Thursday nights, the restaurant has two-, three-, and four-piece specials on the fried chicken dinners, which come with two sides. Other nightly specials include Monday "pounder" night, which offers a pound of wings and a pound of beer for $4.95, and Tuesdays serve up all-you-can-eat spaghetti for $5.95, which includes salad and garlic bread. Wednesday night has large pizzas for the price of a medium, and Tuesday and Saturday nights feature the ever-popular prime rib.
Though the daily specials have proven to be popular with T Street guests, the everyday menu is packed with options that include appetizers, salads, pasta, pizza, sandwiches and full entrees. The restaurant has recently added fried okra to the long list of appetizers, which feature such choices as clam strips, frog legs, portabella mushrooms, fried pickles and peel-and-eat shrimp, alongside more traditional dishes like nachos, potato skins and toasted ravioli.
The variety of sandwiches is also extensive. Just a few of the sandwiches on the menu at T Street are the batter-dipped fish, ribeye steak, grilled pork tenderloin and Italian beef, which all can be made into a basket with fries and slaw for just $3 more than the sandwich price.
And don't forget T Street's Italian options, such as the Eroni special (buttered noodles and secret spices topped with cheese and chicken breast), the pasta Roma (three types of noodles topped with three types of cheese, plus mushrooms), and the pizza menu that ranges in price from a small at $4 to a large, fully-topped pizza for $15.75.
T Street Pub is not only a great choice of restaurants for dinner, but is also ideal for parties. The banquet room holds 45 people, and is available for lunch even when the restaurant portion is not open. Parties can order from the menu or have a buffet, and the owners are happy to accommodate special gatherings.
After ten years in the restaurant business, the couple has truly made its mark on the town of Christopher. They have maintained a successful business while offering great food at great prices, and still have found a way to make patrons comfortable and happy.
As Elaine says, "It's been an adventure."
